A major aspect of mental and spiritual health is the creation of healthy boundaries in our lives. Henry Cloud’s classic book “Boundaries” discusses this subject well. Here are ten of his suggestions of how we can create those boundaries in our lives.

  1. Recognize weaknesses of your life that result from lack of self-control. Galatians 5:22-23
  1. Train your mind for godly thinking, reacting, and behaving. Titus 2:11-12
  1. Recognize the effects of your past (family, relationships, experiences). Isaiah 43:18
  1. Recognize that some people find harmful ways to mean their needs. Romans 12:1-2
  1. Recognize the danger of the desire to please people. Galatians 1:10
  1. Surrender your right for revenge, anger and handicap to the Lord. Romans 12:19
  1. Make your religion your own. Romans 10:17
  1. Release your emotional hurt to the Lord instead of covering it with excessive behavior. Some use overeating or undisciplined activities to hid inside pain. Ephesians 4:29-32
  1. Live more in the light of resurrected Christ’s power. Galatians 2:20
  1. Don’t expect to be self-controlled without habit of prayer, Bible study and personal devotion. Colossians 1:9-11
